Our Commitment

StayWell Custom Communications (SCC) makes a significant investment annually to medically review content and support its commitment to current high standards of accuracy. Content is developed in conformance with current Practice Guidelines of government agencies and medical specialty organizations. CARDIOLOGY

Joel Braunstein, MD

Dr. Braunstein is a board-certified cardiologist and internist who maintains a primary appointment with LifeTech Research Inc., a technology assessment consulting firm, as one of its two co-founding managing directors. He also is an adjunct assistant professor position in the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and is actively engaged as a health services researcher in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Joel received his MD from Northwestern University Medical School in 1996, where he graduated as a member of the honorary medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, while holding an appointment at Harvard Medical School.

Melinda Murray Ratini, DO, MS

Dr. Ratini has been in private practice in Bucks County, PA, since 1985. She is board certified in both family practice and geriatrics. Currently, she is affiliated with Saint Mary Medical Center, Lower Bucks Hospital and Frankford Hospital (Jefferson University Health System). She has served as the chairperson for the Quality Assurance Committee for the Family Practice Department at Lower Bucks Hospital since 1995. Her medical degree is from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Ratini holds an MS in information science from Drexel University and a BS in biology from Pennsylvania State University.

DENTISTRY

Samuel F. Dworkin, DDS, PhD

Dr. Dworkin is a behavioral scientist, clinical psychologist and dentist. He holds joint appointments as professor emeritus at the Department of Oral Medicine, School of Dentistry, and at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Washington. Dr. Dworkin has served as a member of the National Advisory Council of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and is a founding member of the American Pain Society.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Linda Keyes, MD

Dr. Keyes is an attending emergency physician at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheatridge, CO and Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, CO. She is also an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Linda is board certified in emergency medicine and is a fellow off the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Keyes is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Annals of Emergency Medicine and Wilderness and Environmental Medicine.

ENDOCRINOLOGY

Alice Y. Chang, MD

Dr. Chang was an editor with Harvard Health Publications for the Harvard faculty-reviewed consumer website InteliHealth. She graduated from Harvard University, magna cum laude, in 1991 and from Yale Medical School, cum laude, in 1995. She received her training in primary care and general internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Chang also received her Masters of Science with Distinction in Clinical Science at UT Southwestern Medical Center where she is currently on the faculty of the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the Department of Clinical Sciences.

ENVIRONMENTAL MEDICINE

M. Donald Whorton, MD MPH

The late Dr. Whorton was a physician-businessman who built two successful environmental health consulting organizations. Dr. Whorton advised industry on how to improve work environments and reduce the incidence of environmental-related injury or disease. He participated in a variety of epidemiological studies involving workplace exposures to harmful substances. He served as a consultant to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. He was board certified in internal medicine, preventive medicine, and epidemiology. He was a part-time professor at the University of California in Berkeley, an officer of the American Public Health Association, and a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Public Health. He was a selected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He wrote or co-wrote numerous scientific and policy-related articles in professional journals. Dr. Whorton died of ALS (commonly known as Lou Gerhig's disease) in January 2008.

FAMILY PRACTICE

Cynthia Godsey, MSHE, MSN, FNP-C

Ms. Godsey is a certified family nurse practitioner (FNP-C), and has over 28 years of health care experience in patient care, public health administration, and medical informatics.

Brian P. McDonough, MD

Dr. McDonough is associate director of the Saint Francis Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in Wilmington, Del., and clinical professor of family medicine and community health at the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He maintains an active practice. Dr. McDonough has been medical editor for Fox television in Philadelphia since 1989, and his radio reports are syndicated on more than 750 radio stations. He has won numerous broadcasting awards, including four Emmys, The Sword of Hope Award, The Jules Bergman Award, The American Academy of Pediatrics National Recognition Award, and The Sir William Osler Award. He is a former president of the National Association of Physician Broadcasters. Dr. McDonough has written three books, as well as numerous articles in his specialty. He has worked with StayWell Custom Communications for over a decade.

FITNESS AND EXERCISE

Shari Cantor, LPT, M.PT

Shari Cantor received her Masters in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, FL and her BS from Emory University in Atlanta. She is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Women's Health Section. Shari currently works at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in the Outpatient Department with patients with a wide variety of diagnoses. Shari was an All-American swimmer in college.

Sara Collamore, MS

Sara Collamore graduated from Ithaca College with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy in 1998. She worked as a rotating physical therapist at Mount Sinai Hospital for two years. While in New York, she also worked backstage at Broadway theaters for Performing Arts Physical Therapy. In 2000, Dr. Collamore relocated to Massachusetts and accepted a position in the outpatient department of Massachusetts General Hospital. She obtained her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2004. Dr. Collamore has pursued continuing education in manual therapy of the cervical and lumbopelvic spine as well as Pilates. Her primary patient population is those with spinal disorders.

Sherie M. Edwards, DPT

Sherie Edwards received her clinical doctorate in physical therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Prior to this she obtained her masters in 1999 from the MGH IHP. She joined MGH Outpatient Physical Therapy Services in 1999. She has experience treating a variety of orthopedic diagnoses, with expertise treating shoulder dysfunctions and is a member of the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists.

William Egan, MPT, OCS

Mr. Egan is a physical therapist, treating patients with orthopedic and sports injuries at SOAR Physical Therapy in Sea Girt, NJ. Before joining civilian practice, he served for six years as an active-duty physical therapist in the Army Medical Specialist Corps.In 2002, Mr. Egan was board certified in orthopedics by the American Physical Therapy Association. He earned a master's degree in physical therapy from Baylor University, and a BA in psychology from Rutgers University.

Lois Farrell, MSPT, LATC

Ms. Farrell is a senior staff therapist and certified athletic trainer at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Her specialty is in the area of orthopedics and sports medicine. She is currently an athletic trainer for the US Soccer national teams, and was the head athletic trainer for a women's professional soccer team, the Boston Breakers.

Steven J. Fleck, PhD

Dr. Fleck is chairman and professor of sports science at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. He is the former physiology program chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee's Athletic Performance Division. An exercise physiologist, Dr. Fleck is internationally known for research in resistance training, overtraining, and sports supplements. He is the author of more than 100 articles, book chapters, and books on sports science. A fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, Dr. Fleck has also served as an officer of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, which honored him by awarding him the Sports Scientist of the Year in 1991 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He serves as an adviser to several publications and fitness companies.

Paul Glynn, DPT, OCS

Dr. Glynn is a clinical specialist in orthopaedics at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He has worked for more than seven years in numerous capacities in the area of outpatient orthopaedic rehabilitation. Dr. Glynn graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, in 1995 with a BS in exercise physiology and a minor in psychology. He earned his MS in physical therapy in 1997. In 2001, he completed a certificate of advanced studies in orthopaedics from the MGH Institute of Health Professions and went on to become a board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedics in 2002. In 2003, he completed his doctorate in physical therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

Jane Gruber, DPT, MS, OCS

Dr. Gruber is the rehabilitation services manager at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She is an APTS board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist and office training coordinator for the Colonials Synchronized Figure Skating Team. Dr. Gruber also is a member of the US Figure Skating Association. Dr Gruber earned a BS in physical therapy at Russell Sage College. She continued her education at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, where she earned an MS and doctorate in physical therapy.

Timothy W. Mondale, MS

Mr. Mondale graduated from Oregon State University in 1986 with a BS and received a certificate in physical therapy from the Mayo Clinic School of Health Related Sciences in 1988. He is currently at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, specializing in care of the spine for acute and chronic conditions. Mr. Mondale is a certified manual therapist and is completing an advanced master's degree in manual therapy from the University of St. Augustine.

Gayle E. Olson, MS-LATC, PES

Ms. Olson is a certified athletic trainer with more than 25 years' experience working with athletes of all levels from high school and college to Olympic competitors. She earned a BA in health education and physical education from Gustavus Adolphus College. Gayle earned an MS in physical education with a specialization in sports medicine from Indiana University. Ms. Olson recently completed the performance enhancement specialist program with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She is employed by Newton-Wellesley Hospital as coordinator of employee fitness and wellness and manager of the Shipley Fitness Center.

Kyle Rodenhi, BS

Kyle Rodenhi received his BS in Allied Health Pre-Physical Therapy from the University of Connecticut in 1999 and his MS from the University of Connecticutin 2001. He has worked in out-patient orthopedics for five years and has been astaff physical therapist at Massachusetts General Hospital for 2 years. He is also an APTA certifiedclinical instructor and serves as a teaching assistant at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

Edgar T. Savidge, PT, DPT

Edgar Savidge received his BS in Mathematics from Vanderbilt University in 1998, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy and Doctor of Physical Therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2001 and 2003 respectively. He currently works as a staff physical therapist at Massachusetts General Hospital in outpatient orthopedics with a strong clinical interest in shoulder and lower extremity dysfunction. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Sports Physical Therapy Section.

Debra Shaw-Davis DPT, MS, OCS

Debra Shaw-Davis received her BS in Zoology from Iowa State University in 1976 and a Certificate in Physical Therapy from Mayo Clinic in 1978. She completed her post-graduate work at the Institute of Health Professions, Boston, MA with an advanced masters in orthopedic and sports in 1995 and a doctor's in physical therapy in 2003. Her thesis work was on patellofemoral dysfunction. She had her board certification as a Orthopedic Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Dr. Shaw-Davis is a senior physical therapist at Massachusetts General Hospital in outpatient orthopedics. She has worked as a lab instructor at the Institute of Health Professions at both the graduate and post-graduate level.

Matthew Travers, MS

Matthew Travers received his BS in science in 1998, followed by MS in physical therapy in 1999 from Springfield College. He currently works as an outpatient physical therapist at the Massachusetts General Hospital. His clinical interest is in orthopaedics and sports with an emphasis on the shoulder.

James Zachazewski, DPT, SCS, ATC

Dr. Zachazewski is the director of rehabilitation services at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Dr. Zachazewski earned a BS in physical education from Springfield College, an MS in physical therapy from Boston University and a doctorate in physical therapy from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. He also completed a research fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, funded by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research. Dr. Zachazewski is the author/editor of two textbooks, 13 peer-reviewed articles and eight textbook chapters.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

Dr. Cineas is clinical assistant professor in medicine and pediatrics at Brown University. She received her bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She is a graduate of the Harvard Combined Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program. Dr. Cineas currently practices at the Medicine-Pediatrics Primary Care Center, Rhode Island Hospital, a Brown University affiliate. She is actively involved in teaching residents in the clinic setting and is the director of the longitudinal rotation for Brown University medical students.

Monica O. Ferguson, MD

Dr. Ferguson is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She spends the majority of her time seeing patients in the office but also teaches medical students and residents. Dr. Ferguson attended TuftsUniversityfor her undergraduate education, followed by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and then completed her training with an internship and residency in primary care internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She is also board certified in internal medicine.

Joseph S. Gonnella, MD

Dr. Gonnella is dean emeritus and distinguished professor of medicine at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He is the founder and director of the college's Center for Research in Medical Education and Health Care. Dr. Gonnella has been awarded the Commendatore dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarieta Italiana and the Grande Ufficiale by the president of Italy; the Dongbaeg Medal by the president of Korea; the Presidential Medal by Dartmouth College; and the Presidential Citation by Thomas Jefferson University. He has received honorary doctor of medicine degrees from the University of Chieti, Italy, SoonChunHyang University in Seoul, Korea, and Widener University in Philadelphia. Dr. Gonnella was elected to fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh in 2001. His research has focused on the relationships between knowledge, capabilities, and clinical performance.

Leann M. Lesperance, MD, PhD, FAAP

Dr. Lesperance is a lecturer on the Harvard Medical School faculty and a clinical assistant professor at SUNY-Upstate Medical University. She practices pediatrics in Binghamton, NY, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She also holds a doctorate in medical engineering and is a research assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Binghamton University.

Emily Oken, MD, MPH

Dr. Oken is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. She has clinical training in internal medicine and pediatrics. Her research interests include childhood anemia, international nutrition, and the impact of nutrition during pregnancy and early life upon outcomes of pregnancy and later offspring health. Dr. Oken practices at the Fish Center for Women's Health of Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Robert H. Shmerling, MD

Robert H. Shmerling, M.D., is associate physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and associate professor at Harvard Medical School. He has been a practicing rheumatologist for over 20 years at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He is an active teacher in the Internal Medicine Residency Program, serving as the Robinson Firm Chief. He is also a teacher in the Rheumatology Fellowship Program.

NEUROLOGY

Steven M. Bromley, MD

Dr. Bromley is a neurologist and diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. After graduating with honors from the University of Pennsylvania, he attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He currently has a faculty position as clinical assistant professor of neurology at the UMDNJ, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Camden, where he is the medical student coordinator for neurological education.

NUTRITION

Ellen Coleman, RD, MA, MPH

Ms. Coleman is an exercise physiologist and registered dietitian in Riverside, CA and consults for the Sport Clinic. She has written three nutrition continuing education courses for professionals (Nutrition Dimension) and two lay books on sports nutrition (Bull Publishing). Ms. Coleman provided a nutrition column for Sports Medicine Digest for more than 20 years and is a two-time finisher of the Hawaii Ironman triathlon.

Johanna T. Dwyer, DSc RD

Dr. Dwyer is director of the Frances Stern Nutrition Center at Tufts-New England Medical Center Hospitals in Boston. She is a professor of medicine (nutrition) and community health at the Tufts University Schools of Medicine and Nutrition, and the senior scientist at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts. She is an adjunct professor at the Harvard School of Public Health. She served in 2001-2002 as assistant administrator for human nutrition in the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and in 2000 on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, and served for more than 10 years on the Food and Nutrition board. One of the nation's most respected nutritionists, she is the author or co-author of more than 180 research and 280 review articles published in scientific journals. Dr. Dwyer's resume includes numerous other professional groups, honors and awards. A registered dietitian, she received the American Dietetic Association's Medallion Award in 2002. She is a past president of the Society for Nutrition Education and the American Institute of Nutrition (now the American Society for Nutrition).

Laura B. Fiveash, DrPH, MPH, RD

A free-lance editor for SCC since 2007, Ms. Fiveash has held several positions in the field of clinical nutrition for major health care centers. She is a teaching assistant in the Department of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health at a major teaching medical institution in Birmingham, AL.

Cynthia Happel, RD, MEd

Ms. Happel is a registered dietitian with 25 years of experience in clinical and public health nutrition. She has worked as a clinical dietitian with patients ranging from newborns to the elderly, including premature neonates, pediatric oncology and general medical patients, and adult diabetic, renal, cardiac, general medical, pain and psychiatric patients. Ms. Happel earned a BS degree in nutrition/dietetics at the University of Wisconsin and her MEd in counseling and human services at the University of Idaho. She is presently self-employed as a nutrition consultant in the Portland, OR, area.

OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

Mary S. Dolan, MD, MPH

Dr. Dolan is assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina, and division chief of Women's Primary Health Care. She attended Emory University Schools of Medicine and Public Health, followed by an internship and residency at UNC, Chapel Hill. Dr. Dolan is a member of several committees and professional societies, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Ambulatory Care Practices Committee, Clinical Practice Committee, and the Breast Cancer Risk Communication Committee.

Thad McDonald, MD

Dr. McDonald is a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology, affiliated with the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is with WakeMed faculty physicians in Raleigh, where he is the residency director and president of the medical staff. He graduated from University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology.

OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE

Robert Blink, MD, MPH

Dr. Blink is a medical director and vice president of WorkCare in Alameda, Calif. He is a board certified occupational medicine physician and a certified medical review officer with over 20 years of experience in occupational health. He has extensive experience in providing occupational medicine care and consultation to employers and employees. He also has considerable expertise in the biotechnology sector, providing consultative services to multinational biotech clients regarding medical protection for employees working with novel technologies and substances. Dr. Blink has developed medical and toxicological surveillance programs to comply with requirements of the federal government, European Union, and North American Free Trade Agreement.

ONCOLOGY

Richard F. Alteri, MD

A free-lance editor for SCC since 2007, Dr. Alteri is a medical editor for the American Cancer Society (ACS) National Home Office in metro Atlanta. He has held positions as a supervisor, medical technologist, clinical research coordinator, and medical author during the past 18 years. Dr. Alteri develops, revises, and edits content related to all aspects of the cancer experience for ACS.

David S. Fischer, MD

Dr. Fischer is a graduate of Harvard Medical School. He is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. He is currently clinical professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine, where he is chair of the membership committee of the Yale Comprehensive Cancer Center, vice chair of Yale New Haven Hospital Cancer Committee, chair of the Transfusion Committee and a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Dr. Fischer is the senior editor of Cancer Therapy, The Follow-up of Cancer, 4th edition, and the senior author of The Cancer Chemotherapy Handbook , now in its 6th edition.

Bruce Dezube, MD

Dr. Dezube is an associate in medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is the Director of the Experimental Therapeutics/Phase I program and the Director of the AIDS Malignancy Research and Treatment Center both at BIDMC, a major affiliate of Harvard Medical School. He also is the associate director of the Cancer Clinical Trials Office also at BIDMC. Dr. Dezube is the senior editor of Cancer Therapy, The Follow-up of Cancer, 4th edition, and the senior author of The Cancer Chemotherapy Handbook , now in its 6th edition.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

Kristin Hammersmith, MD

Dr. Hammersmith received her medical degree from West Virginia University. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins University in 2002. Following subspecialty training in cornea and external disease at Wills Eye Hospital, she joined the Wills Cornea Service. She is currently an instructor at Jefferson Medical College. Dr. Hammersmith has a special interest in ocular surface disorders and coordinates the Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid Clinic.

Tara Uhler, MD

Dr. Uhler is a glaucoma specialist in Philadelphia. After graduating from Harvard College and Medical School, she moved to Philadelphia, where she completed her ophthalmology residency and a two-year glaucoma fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital before joining the Glaucoma Service there. Interested in education, she is the director of the Wills Eye Residency Program at Thomas Jefferson University.

ORTHOPEDICS

Timothy Bhattacharyya, MD

Dr. Bhattacharyya is an orthopedic surgeon and instructor of orthopedics at Harvard Medical School. His interests are orthopedic trauma (fracture surgery) and total joint replacement. He has a significant background in biostatistics. He has authored articles in the Journal of Trauma and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and has presented at national orthopedic meetings.

Samantha A. Spencer, MD

Dr. Spencer attended Northwestern University, where she majored in integrated science, biochemistry/biophysics, mathematics and economics, graduating with distinction and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She attended medical school at the University of Michigan, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. Dr. Spencer went on to residency in orthopedic surgery at the Harvard Combined Program. She will pursue her special interest in pediatric orthopedics as a fellow at Children's Hospital Boston.

OTOLARYNGOLOGY

Matthew W. Ryan, MD

Dr. Ryan is assistant professor of rhinology and sinus surgery, general otolaryngology at the University of Texas, Medical Branch, Galveston. Dr. Ryan attended medical school at UTMB and graduated with high honors. He completed a surgical internship at the Medical University of South Carolina, followed by residency training in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Florida. Dr. Ryan's clinical practice focuses on the newest surgical techniques for the treatment of sinonasal disorders.

PEDIATRICS

Sybil Cineas, MD

Dr. Cineas is clinical assistant professor in medicine and pediatrics at Brown University. She received her bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She is a graduate of the Harvard Combined Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program.

Cynthia Happel, RD, MEd

Ms. Happel is a registered dietitian with 25 years of experience in clinical and public health nutrition. She has worked as a clinical dietitian with patients ranging from newborns to the elderly, including premature neonates, pediatric oncology and general medical patients, and adult diabetic, renal, cardiac, general medical, pain and psychiatric patients. Ms. Happel earned a BS degree in nutrition/dietetics at the University of Wisconsin and her MEd in counseling and human services at the University of Idaho. She is presently self-employed as a nutrition consultant in the Portland, OR, area.

J. Gordon Lambert, MD

Dr. Lambert is a board certified pediatrician and was in private practice for 20 years before shifting to medical publishing and informatics. He worked for companies such as Mosby Consumer Health, Applied Medical Informatics and Utah Health Informatics.

Leann M. Lesperance, MD, PhD, FAAP

Dr. Lesperance is a lecturer on the Harvard Medical School faculty and a clinical assistant professor at SUNY-Upstate Medical University. She practices pediatrics in Binghamton, NY, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She also holds a doctorate in medical engineering and is a research assistant professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Binghamton University.

Emily Oken, MD, MPH

Dr. Oken is an instructor in the Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. She has clinical training in internal medicine and pediatrics. Her research interests include childhood anemia, international nutrition, and the impact of nutrition during pregnancy and early life upon outcomes of pregnancy and later offspring health. Dr. Oken practices at the Women's Health Center of Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Samantha A. Spencer, MD

Dr. Spencer attended Northwestern University, where she majored in integrated science, biochemistry/biophysics, mathematics and economics, graduating with distinction and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She attended medical school at the University of Michigan, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. She went on to residency in orthopedic surgery at the Harvard Combined Program. She will pursue her special interest in pediatric orthopedics as a fellow at Children's Hospital Boston.

PSYCHIATRY

Jagannath Devulapally, MD

Dr. Devulapally graduated from the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine and completed residency training in psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Devulapally is an attending staff physician at RUMC and is working as an investigator on multiple clinical trials focused on treatment of the spectrum of psychiatric illnesses, from anxiety disorders to mood disorders to psychotic illnesses.

Marcia L. Zuckerman, MD

Dr. Zuckerman is a graduate of Princeton University, Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program. She practices psychiatry at the Cambridge Health Alliance. She is the associate editor of the Carlat Report, a monthly psychiatric newsletter, and is currently participating in research concerning antidepressant use in young children at Children's Hospital Boston. She is also involved in the use of computer technology to enhance patient safety, and sits on the technology subcommittees of the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society.

Donald Oken, MD

Dr. Oken has published approximately 50 articles in medical journals on psychiatric topics, most in the area of Psychosomatic Medicine, and edited 2 books. He has been on the Editorial Boards of several psychiatric journals including the Archives of General Psychiatry, the preeminent research journal in the specialty, and served for 10 years as Editor-in-Chief of Psychosomatic Medicine, the premier journal in that field. He was a member of several major educational and research committees of the American Psychiatric Association. He has also served as a member of several test development committees of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the national organization responsible for the testing of physicians for licensure. Dr. Oken is a graduate of Harvard Medical School with postgraduate work in internal medicine.

RADIOLOGY

Raja Cheruvu, MD

Dr. Cheruvu is a summa cum laude graduate of Boston University and Boston University School of Medicine, where he received dual degrees for both his BA and MD. He completed his residency program in diagnostic radiology at Baylor College of Medicine and subsequently served in the Armed Forces as chief of cross-sectional imaging at Sheppard Air Force Base Hospital. Upon completion of his military service, he continued with a fellowship in MRI at the University of California, San Diego. He is board certified and specializes in MRI.

SURGERIES AND PROCEDURES

Katherine Trahan, MD

Dr. Trahan is currently a practicing general surgeon at the University of Texas, Medical Branch, Galveston, where she covers general surgical services and trauma, and performs endoscopy. She graduated summa cum laude with honors in English from James Madison University. She received her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed five years of general surgery residency at the University of Texas, Medical Branch, Galveston, in 2003. She achieved board certification in general surgery in February 2004 and is currently applying to the American College of Surgeons for a fellowship.

UROLOGY

Leonard Gomella, MD

Dr. Gomella is the Bernard W. Godwin, Jr. Professor of Prostate Cancer and chairman of the Department of Urology at Jefferson Medical College. He is also director of urologic oncology for the Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Gomella completed his medical school, general surgery and urology training at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, and a two-year urologic oncology fellowship with the Surgery Branch of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Gomella is involved in both basic science and clinical research in the development of new diagnostic techniques and treatments for prostate, bladder and kidney cancer through the Kimmel Cancer Center.
